There's a lot that goes into planning a fun birthday party for your child and their guests. Most people start planning with some of the important details of the decorations and what to feed your guests. These are all essential aspects to having a great birthday party but something to keep in mind is that kids don't necessarily pay attention to the decorations or the food. Kids are most interested in what they are going to PLAY! At nyc pARTy kids we've done tons of Star Wars themed Birthday parties and we've found a mix of certain games really gets the kids involved and having a great time! Here's a brief description of what you need and how to play each game:
Death Star Dodge Ball
This is a variation of the classic gym class Dodge Ball. We use a light weight inflatable death star dodge ball that lights up. To set up select an area that has enough room you can have 2 teams opposing each other. Either tape with a brightly colored tape, write with chalk or hang a flexible string down the middle of the room, yard or surface on which you will play to create a clear division for each team to stay on.
Inflatable Death Star Beach or Foam Ball Decorated as the Death Star
Tape or a long piece of flexible chord to divide the playing areas so the teams can stand on each side
Count out amount of guests who will play
Line them in a straight line
Go down the line and separate the children into groups. We suggest counting by 2's down the line to go to separate groups. For example you can name one group the Dark Side and the other group the Force and put every other child in the Dark Side or the the Force.
Once the teams are assembled, put them on far sides of where you will have your playing area. If this is inside, have each group stand in a line against opposing walls. If outside, if there is a fence or hedges around the perimeter, have them also stand on opposing areas.
Go Over the Rules with the Guests
Make sure you have everyone's attention and make sure to go over how to play safely:
1- We only throw the ball towards each other GENTLY. The object of this is to lightly tap one another with the ball- not to hurt each other. We all want to be SAFE so we can all PLAY!
2- We only aim towards someone's body in between someone's shoulders and hips.
3- We do not aim at someone's head or feet!
4- Each group has to stay on their side of the line.
5- If an opposite member of a team catches a ball you throw, you are out AND one of their teammates can come back in the game.
6- Team with the last person standing wins!
This game is fairly quick moving and we suggest 3 quick rounds of it. If for some reason the guests aren't totally engaged, it is fine to move on to the next activity or if your guests love it- then if you can always play it longer!
This is a fun bowling game where the guests get to take out the Dark Side! You can play it using either Droids or Star Wars themed Villains!
Large Inflatable Bowling Set
Droid Masks or Computer Print Outs of Star Wars Villains such as Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, Jabba the Hut, Droids, etc.
Using either a Droid Party Mask or a Computer Print out of a Villain tape a the face to the top of each bowling pin. We suggest using packing tape because it is clear and generally secure but also lightweight enough that removing it is usually easy.
Line up the Bowling Pins
Line up the guests (it is almost always easier if you have them line up against a wall)
Have one adult or party helper stand behind the pins to reset as each guest goes
Have the guests roll the inflatable bowling ball toward the pins to knock them down
After 3 tries have the next guest take a turn and have the child go to the end of the line
Extender Activities with the Star Wars Dark Side Bowling Pins
You can also use these pins to create a maze that the kids can run through! We use them as part of an obstacle course afterwards.
Star Wars Dark Side Freeze Tag
You could also play Freeze Tag but keep the Droid Pins in the middle to add to the intensity of the game to keep the players having to retain greater control of where they are running. This can help naturally calm the game a bit since the players need to be more aware of their bodies.
Guardian of the Galaxy
No props are needed for this game.
This is a very simple game that is very fun to play and the kids always love! It is a great game to play if you want to fill a bit of time. This game works well at any time because most kids tend to love it but a party tip on when to play it could be when some guests have arrived early but you are still waiting for more guests or you've had cake and there is downtime before the party has ended and you've already run through a lot of the other activities.
Select one person to be the Guardian
Tell the players that the Guardian of the Galaxy hunts through space looking for the Moving Force and when it sees it sends out Gamma Rays to destroy the Moving Force. Because of this, the players all need to remain frozen when the Guardian looks at them! When the Guardian turns their back however they can move however they like so long as: a. it does not touch another player b. they are not laying on the floor
Do a practice round where the Guardian turns around looking at the guests and they have to Freeze.
If they don't freeze, they are out.
Pass the Planet
This is a simple variation of Hot Potato but we use either an inflatable Earth beach ball or a smaller glow in the dark planet ball.
I-Pod, Cell phone that can play music, CD player, etc
CD or download of The Empire Strikes Back
Glow in the Dark Earth Ball or Inflatable Earth Beach Ball
Sit guests in a circle
Explain to them that the object of the game is to pass the Earth to the person sitting directly next to them as quickly as they can.
The music will stop and when it does they do not want to be the person holding the Earth or they will be out.
